The Grind

Grinding your coffee beans

Grinding coffee makes it go stale quicker so it’s important to grind only what you are planning to use. Additionally, purchasing a high-quality grinder that produces an even grind is critical. There are two basic styles of coffee grinders. The (whirly) blade grinder is an inexpensive option; however, it also produces an uneven grind resulting in a bitter or sour taste in the cup. I would recommend a burr grinder. Although slightly more expensive, these grinders create a consistent grind regardless of what grind size you are using.  If you are going to upgrade any coffee appliance, I would recommend upgrading your grinder first.

You will also want to modify your grind based on the brewing method you are planning to use allowing for the proper surface area exposed. This coffee grind chart provides an easy reference for determining the perfect grinder setting.
